BSc Thesis
Compositional and ecological alterations of the intestinal microbiota associated with colorectal cancer and its progression
My final thesis investigated compositional and ecological alterations of the gut microbiota associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) using publicly available 16S rRNA sequencing data from 117 individuals (89 CRC patients and 28 healthy controls). Using R-based microbiome analysis (phyloseq, ALDEx2, SpiecEasi), I analyzed taxonomic composition, alpha and beta diversity, and microbial co-occurrence networks.
Results revealed reduced microbial richness and increased heterogeneity in CRC patients, enrichment of taxa such as Parvimonas and Peptostreptococcus, and a reorganization of microbial ecological interactions where pathogenic taxa such as Fusobacterium nucleatum gained centrality in advanced stages.
